New Patients

What to expect on your first visit

Each practitioner works in a slightly different way. This is what to expect coming to visit me.

  • 1 hour is given to a new patient as I like to have time to listen and understand the problem from the patient’s point of view.
  • You are welcome to bring along another person to accompany you.
  • For the consultation and treatment it may be useful to bring along a pair of shorts and a vest top.

A full case history will be taken. Questions will be asked about:

  1. Your symptoms such as where the problem is, how long it has been going on for, and the possible causes of the symptoms
  2. Any related tests such as x rays or scans
  3. General health such as previous operations or medicines.

An assessment will be done next.

If a patient is attending for Osteopathic Treatment or Deep Tissue Massage this firstly involves observing. A patient may be asked to go through some simple movements such as sitting or standing. Then the muscles and joints, related to the symptoms, would be examined, muscle power testing and checking of reflexes are often part of the examination.

If a patient is going to have acupuncture treatment examination of the pulses and observation of the tongue would be done. [/column] [column size=”1/2″] osteo-assessment-3 [/column] [/row]

The initial case history taking followed by the assessment, will provide the information for a brief discussion to occur. The type of treatment that will be the most effective for you is discussed before it starts and if Osteopathy, Deep Tissue Massage, Acupuncture or Naturopathic treatment is not suitable, I can refer to the appropriate person. If referral to a GP is necessary I will provide a letter outlining why (this would only be done with your consent).

Confidentiality is observed at all times.

If your condition is not appropriate for treatment, you will not be charged for the consultation.

If treatment is appropriate for you then it would start on the first visit after the consultation please look under treatments. After the treatment I will often give advice on posture, exercises, nutrition and hydrotherapy. This helps people get more from their treatment and also helps prevent a recurrence.

How many treatments?

You will not be signed up for a course of treatment. Just as everybody is an individual, how quickly each person responds to treatment is different. A patients progress has to be observed and how they feel they are benefiting from the treatment must be discussed before deciding if they need to come back.

Further treatment may be necessary depending on the condition. Sometimes only one is needed, most people may require 2-5 treatments. Many people decide to have occasional preventative treatment.
