There are many different types of headaches that can occur. Tension headaches are the most common type of headache and are more common in women.

Possible triggers are:

  • Stress and anxiety
  • Poor posture
  • Tiredness
  • Noise
  • Bright sunlight
  • Missing meals
  • Relaxation, massage and exercises may help to reduce stress, ease tension and improve posture which may help the headaches. Relaxation techniques such as yoga may also be useful.

    Guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) state that a course of up to 10 sessions of acupuncture over a 5-8 week period may be beneficial in preventing chronic tension type headaches

    Seek Medical Help If
    -Your headaches are abrupt and severe
    -Your headache is a different kind of headache to previous ones
    -Your headache is combined with a fever, stiff neck, mental confusion, seizures, double vision, weakness, numbness or speaking difficulties.
    -Your headache wakes you up from sleeping and if there is no relief even with painkillers.
    -Your headaches occurs after a head injury, especially if the headache gets worse
